Groundwork, 2009 Grenache, Santa Barbara County

"Sans Liege is the brain-child of Curt Schalchlin who worked for David Corey of Core Wines and Russell From and Mac Myers of Barrel 27, Herman Story and McPrice Myers. Definitely pushing the envelope for richness, you wouldn't mistake these wines for their French counterparts but they well reflect how these varietals express themselves here in California. The 2007 Groundwork Santa Barbara County Grenache is a hedonistic example of this grape varietal. It has copious amounts of red cherry fruit, some spice notes and a smooth easy finish. It is not huge on structure, so don't think to put this one away but it is pure pleasure in a glass right now and for the next couple of years". (Keith Mabry, K&L Hollywood)

This wine flaunts the diversity and elegance of Central Coast Grenache, leading with aromatics of raspberry cobbler, white pepper, Moroccan dates, tart cherries, cocoa powder, brown sugar and Provencal lamb stew. In the mouth are subtle shadings from blood orange, eucalyptus, fresh ground espresso roast, thyme, forest floor and grilled venison. A pleasant, dusty herbaciousness rounds out the palate, recalling rosemary, sage and tarragon.

"Curt Schalchlin–winemaker and owner of both the Sans Liege and the Groundwork labels–is making some of the most interesting and sought-after wines in the state of California.  His winemaking style, eccentric personality and artistic labels are all very reminiscent of that of Manfred Krankl of Sine Qua Non fame.

Sans Liege and Groundwork are two tiny one-man shows located in the heart of Santa Barbara County.  From the vineyard to the cellar, from marketing to delivery, Curt does it all.  While wearing so many hats admittedly keeps him incredibly busy, it also guarantees that his uncompromising high level standards are consistently met and the proof is in every bottle of wine that he makes.  Curt’s passion flows in his current lineup of latest and greatest, which showcases his talents and highlights the great success that was seen in both the 2009 and 2010 vintages along the Central Coast and beyond.

While no one would mistake this for a French wine, it is a wonderful interpretation of this famous Rhone varietal.  It starts out with dusty red fruit, grenadine, violets and chalky mineral notes with a fine balance of fruit intensity and spice. The red raspberry, strawberry and cheery fruit coats the palate with hints of crushed rock, fennel, white pepper, truffle and anise." www.sfwtc.com

Consilience 2007 Grenache Blanc, Santa Barbara

Consilience winery has been making wine since 1997, but was formally founded in 1999. They have been making wines "loosely focused around the typical Rhône varietals" (most of which are sourced from the Fess Parker estate) ever since. Their winemaking philosophy is to create wine with distinct expression of regional characteristics. Brett Escalera is the winemaker from Consilience. He brings experience from his ongoing tenure at Fess Parker Winery where he has been making wine since 1996. His position at Fess Parker's Winery also allows Consilience to source much of its fruit from that estate.

The admirable goals of Consilience wines are straightforward:  "To make the most expressive and reliably high quality wines possible, and to share them with an unsurpassed level of customer service.”

Winemaker’s Comments: Grenache Blanc is the white berried form of Grenache, and also has its origins in the northeast of Spain where it is found in the blends from the Rioja.

Located in the wine country town of Los Olivos, Consilience winery’s grapes come from the Camp4 Vineyard, known for cool mornings, long warm days, and cool nights; perfect for maximum ripeness for Grenache Blanc, maintaining the necessary acidity.

The cycle of cool mornings, warm days and return to cool evenings are what make this a prime growing area for the typical Rhone grape varieties. All factors make for a long growing season and maximal flavor development. Barrel fermented in older French and American oak, this Grenache Blanc proudly exhibits well rounded aromatics of caramel apple with that fresh from the orchard scent and crispness on the palate.

Aromas:  fresh green apples, bathed in rich, gooey caramel
Body:  smooth and luscious on the palate
Vintage: 2007
Varietal: Grenache Blanc
Appellation: Santa Barbara
Case Production: 447 cases

About the winemaker: Brett Escalera’s roots in winemaking can be traced back to his grandfathers who were both home winemakers, but his passion was inspired thru courses taught by Dr. Marian Baldy, author of The University Wine Course, while attending California State University, Chico as an undergraduate business major. In 1992 he enrolled as a graduate student at California State University, Fresno where he completed the course requirements for a second major in Enology, a minor in Viticulture, and a Masters of Science in Agricultural Chemistry. His thesis project work was on the trellising, training, and pruning of Chardonnay grapevines in Santa Barbara County to improve yield, fruit composition, and wine quality.

After a very brief stint in 2005 as the Director of Winemaking for Central Coast Wine Services in Santa Maria, Brett returned to the Fess Parker organization in 2005 as the Head Winemaker for the Parker Station line of wines and more recently as the Director of Winemaking for the Parker Wine Center.

Fess Parker, TV Star / Fess Parker, Winemaker
When Fess Parker was cast in the roll of Davy Crockett in the mid-1950’s, it caused an international sensation and changed his life forever. The characters Fess portrayed, Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone, inspired generations of Americans. Throughout the late 1950’s and 1960’s Fess was at the pinnacle of a television career that has an unprecedented impact upon American popular culture. But is was Fess’ entrepreneurial spirit that prompted his leaving Hollywood to go into business for himself. The traits that Crockett and Boone embodied - integrity, resourcefulness and good humor -- carried over to Fess’ personal life and formed the foundation upon which the family business was built.

The purchase of 714 acres in the Santa Ynez Valley changed the course of the Parker family’s history. Realizing the potential of Santa Barbara County as a premium grape-growing region, Fess and his son, Eli, originally set out in 1989 to plant a small vineyard and sell fruit to local producers. But, as Fess’ daughter, Ashley explains, “ Fess is from Texas, so he can’t do anything small.“ The Fess Parker Winery and Vineyard now farms almost 700 acres on four vineyards throughout Santa Barbara County.

Working as a family has always been a great source of pride and pleasure for the Parker family. Eli Parker began in the family business as assistant winemaker in 1989. After several years of learning the craft at the side of renowned and accomplished winemakers, Eli took the reigns as winemaker himself with the 1995 vintage. A leader of the winery since it’s inception, it was in 1996 that Eli formally assumed the title and responsibilities of President. In the early 1990’s, Ashley ran the first tastings out of the barrel room and represented the winery at trade shows. In 1998, Ashley became Eli’s partner, working on the public relations and sales and marketing teams. The presence of Fess and his wife Marcy as the founding visionaries of the winery is a vital and enduring one. First-class hospitality has always been at the core of their ventures, first as hoteliers and eventually with the opening of the winery.

Rodney's Vineyard: The estate vineyard, named in honor of Fess’s late son-in-law, was the first vineyard developed, and it surrounds the winery. With a total of 118 acres planted — approximately 31 acres on the valley floor, and the balance on the expansive upper mesa behind the winery — this vineyard provides the foundation of our Rhone wine program and has already produced several award winning Syrah and Viognier bottlings.

BLAIR FOX - Head Winemaker
Blair Fox was recently awarded the Andre Tchelistcheff Winemaker of the Year Award at the 2008 San Francisco International Wine Competition!
Graduating from UC Davis in 1999 with a combined degree in Viticulture and Enology, Blair Fox gained winemaking experience at Sunstone Winery in the Santa Ynez Valley (1999-2001), and at Haselgrove Winery – a custom-crush winery in McLaren Vale, Australia (2003). He also traveled through France’s Rhône Valley before returning to his hometown of Santa Barbara. He then joined Fess Parker Winery & Vineyard as Associate Winemaker, overseeing the Rhône varietal wines. Fox had previously consulted in the vineyard for the winery’s 2002 harvest. “Having focused on the winery’s estate Syrah and Rhône varietal vineyards, I’m excited to add on the responsibility for Ashley’s and Bien Nacido vineyards and control the Burgundian part of our portfolio (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay),” said Fox.

“The vineyards and clonal selection here are of such high quality, and the Parkers are a great family to work for.” Fox continues the stylistic direction set by Eli Parker when capturing the terroir of the vineyards. (Information found on the Fess Parker Website - also note that Blair Fox also is the owner/winemaker of Blair Fox Cellars).

Critical Acclaim for the 2007 Viognier:
"A very fine Viognier, one of the best of the vintage, that takes the variety's exotic, sometimes over the top richness and controls it with crisp coastal acidity and a deft touch of minerals. Elegant and interesting, it displays utterly dry flavors of Meyer lemon, lime, fig, date, honeysuckle, vanilla, spice and flint flavors. Drink now for freshness." 93 Points, Wine Enthusiast

Margerum 2006 M5, Santa Ynez Valley

Doug Margerum (right), one of the early pioneers of the Santa Barbara wine scene in the 1980’s, was also a restaurateur, with his well known and very popular Wine Cask restaurant. So he, above all knows the importance of the balance a wine must have to be able to compliment and enhance the dining experience.

M5 is a Chateauneuf-du-Pape style blend using five grape varieties from twelve of the highest quality vineyards in Santa Barbara County.

Is it a Varietal Blend or a Vineyard Blend - OR BOTH?
50% Syrah -  (24% Alisos Vineyard, 24% Vogelzang Vineyard, 15% Great Oak Ranch Vineyard, 20% Black Oak Vineyard, 7% Alondra de los Prados Vineyard, 7% Purisima Mountain Vineyard, and 3% Colson Canyon Vineyard)
26% Grenache - (58% Zaca Mesa Vineyard, 15% Vogelzang Vineyard, 10% Purisima Mountain Vineyard, 11% Crossroads Vineyard and 5% Watch Hill Vineyard)
9% Mouvedre - (78% Zaca Mesa Vineyard and 22% Vogelzang Vineyard)
4% Counoise- (Stolpman Vineyard)
4% Cinsault- (Stolpman Vineyard)

Case Production: 2,200 cases

This carefully crafted blend brings together the black, deep licorice richness of syrah and melds it with the bright raspberry-cherry flavors of the Grenache. The mouvedre, counoise and cinsault add bright acidity, tannins and aromatic notes of spice and fruit. The result is a full bodied yet delightfully well balanced and lively blend.

Regarded as one of California’s top producers of Rhone style wines, Doug and his winemaker Doug Scott are masters at sourcing out the best fruit from some of the region’s most renowned growers. Names such as Volgang, Purisima Mountain, Alisos and Colson Canyon are a few of vineyards chosen by these two talented vinters to make their wine.

"The M5 mission statement: M5 is a wine that is from a thought - a blend that is an amalgamation of memories, both distant and recent, of wines I've tasted and loved the past thirty-three years.  As always, this multi-vineyard, multi-varietal cuvee illustrates the benefits inherent in a blended wine."

From the Winelover's Page
"In Santa Barbara County winemaking circles, Doug Margerum is nearly legendary.  ... While running the Wine Cask complex, he also made wine under the tutelage of and with Jim Clendenen (ABC), Bob Lindquist (Qupe), Fred Brander (Brander) and others. Many of these wines were Wine Cask labeled bottlings to serve as house wines for the restaurant; others were made under the MWC label and sold at retail. When Margerum left the restaurant business behind, he had plenty of winemaking experience and was finally able to devote his full time and attention to winemaking at Margerum Wine Company, where he focuses on Rhone style red wines and eclectic whites, assisted by production winemaker, Doug "Scotty" Scott....  ... Sweet ripe fruit, both red (raspberry and cherry) and black, combine for a bombastic, high tempered, full bodied red wine in a Chateauneuf du Pape style that, like I said, will kick out the jams and give you immediate flavor gratification.

5 STARS - From Steve Tanzer of San Francisco, California on 9/17/2008.

Medium, bright-rimmed red. Sexy raspberry and white pepper on the nose, with a subtle anise quality adding complexity. Bright raspberry and cherry flavors offer impressive depth and urgency, fleshing out with air but maintaining verve. There's an impressive delicacy and understatement here that reminded me of pinot noir. It should be noted that Margerum's winery boasts an impressive set of racks filled with some of the greatest Burgundies and Rhones-and even some Bordeaux too.

A popular wine at the girl and the fig, it is a perfect compliment to any meat dish such as our butcher steak or roast lamb but is delicate enough to pair with our quiche or duck confit.

2006 Consilience Grenache Blanc, Santa Barbara

Aromas: Rich mouthfeel with minerality, white peach, pear, and melon. Excellent acidity.
Body: medium to full
Color: golden yellow

From their website: Nestled among boutique shops & restaurants, the Consilience tasting room is located on Grand Avenue in the wine country town of Los Olivos, California. The philosophy at Consilience has been to not only create expressive, reliably high quality wines, but also to put that wine in the bottle for a reasonable price that is far below what comparable quality wines would cost.

This vibrant 2006 vintage of our Grenache Blanc is predominantly from the Camp 4 vineyard in Los Olivos in the Santa Ynez Valley. Camp 4 is the newest addition to the Fess Parker family of vineyards. Located in the Santa Ynez Valley it is just southwest of he winery. The 1,400-acre piece of land was purchased in 1999 and the initial planting of 250 acres produced its first crop 2003. This vineyard experiences a warmer climate. Camp 4 is currently planted to 25 acres of Grenache, 10 acres of Mourvedre, 15 acres of Roussanne, 130 acres of Syrah and 25 acres of Viognier.

Eat with: quiche Lorraine, green salad, matchstick frites.
